mm that seems to say to me, I may be wrong, that if we believe in God then nothing bad will happen and the rest of us can just make do with being ourselves... a somewhat flawed theory..

Nah, that's a misconception, G. God doesn't cause crap to happen, but he can stop it from happening *if it's for the overall best for that person's spiritual wellbeing, and the people surrounding them* Character not comfort.
